Donating

“The point is this: he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” Holy Apostle Paul, 2 Corinthians 9:6-7

Why Give

What does St. Paul mean when he says that “he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully?” He is not promising abundant riches to those who donate. Instead, he is speaking of a spiritual harvest – a reward of heavenly riches. When we intentionally give of our time, talents, and treasures, we stretch our compassion for others and conform ourselves to God’s will in our lives. How much each person and family donates must be based on careful discernment, considering income, living expenses, and other pertinent information.

Our small parish has many expenses involved in property maintenance, worship services, pastoral work, and other programs. Here is a list of example expenses that your donations will go towards supporting:

  • Basic expenses: utilities, pastoral work, candles, etc.
  • Capital maintenance: parking lot, roof, interior repairs, etc.
  • Worship investments: liturgical vestments, ripidion, icons, etc.
  • Community: children’s liturgy, young adults group, etc.

Please also consider donating to charities that support corporeal works of mercy, such as Durham Outlook, ShareLife, and the Catholic Near East Welfare Association.

How to Donate

The two ways to give to our parish are in-person via cash or cheque, and online via e-transfer. We are a registered charity and do provide tax receipts. If you have any questions, please contact us.

In-Person

Cash and cheques are accepted in-person. There is a collections basket located in the front pew in front of the statue of St. Mary. Use an envelope and write your name and address on it so we can issue tax receipts.

If you choose to use a cheque, please note that our bank is very strict that the name must match our account exactly. Be careful to write “Protection of the Mother of God Slovak Byzantine Catholic Parish” in its entirety.

E-Transfer

We have set up theotokos.donations@pm.me to receive e-transfers. Include your name and address so we can issue tax receipts.

Most Canadian banks and credit unions have zero-fee e-transfers; please check with yours to confirm.
